What makes literature immortal?

Most of us are of the paradigm approach that, use of complex vocabulary makes a piece of literature stand out! But, is that even true? If you will interrogate yourself you will end up realizing that, use of intricate words beautifies writing but, the plot always remains immortal in our memories!

Use of vocabulary is surely very important as it uplifts your work. A good author is always the one who picturizes a situation through his words. He/She makes us feel every emotion of their character, as if we ourselves were the protagonists! 'Choice of words' is another thing that distinguishes a seasoned writer. Yet, I would say that, the plot is equally important. Good vocabulary is only a cherry on the cake!

Shakespeare, one of the greatest writer we ever know has a proficient vocabulary but, is it his vocabulary that makes him relevant even to our age! Certainly not. It is his plots, his characters which we can relate to even today. Every piece of his work is pertinent to our current living; Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo Juliet is read and studied in detail even today because of the parallels that we can draw form it.

Whenever we finish reading a book the part of the book that remains with us throughout our life is the story, the concept and the ideology of the book. We find Sudha Murty, Agatha Christie, R K Narayan relatable because of their plots. I would also say that they are widely read because of their language. Their writing is not at all vocab intensive and hence commoner can enjoy their brainchild!

To terminate this blog, I would first vindicate myself by saying, vocabulary is important. But good literature is not vocabulary 'intensive always'! I would say it is fifty-fifty with plot and the 'choice of words'!

  1. Well.. this blog post is all about roaming in the same circle. The way you have approached the blog is unique yet I feel that you ultimately ended up saying that vocabulary is equally important. I will tell how: the fact that you can remember the stories, draw parallels and relate to the character and incidents is because of the vocabulary used to describe the above said elements. Vocabulary and a good story cannot be isolated from each other. You find a particular work interesting or dull because of the way it is expressed and THAT is done by nothing but vocabulary. As I said, we would keep moving in circles with this one yet, a different approach. I get your point. Keep writing! :)
