Letter!

A week ago, I was cleaning my cupboard. Papers, books, magazines, some unfinished cards, chart papers, letters, birthday cards flooded out of my cupboard! Usually many of us have the habit of hoarding things! I am one of those so, whenever I clean my cupboard I have all my memories rushing to remind me of some sweet, some bitter moments! These amassed souvenirs are one of my most treasured possessions; it won't be wrong to say that they are relics of my life (though it's too early to say so).
As I was cleaning my stuff, I came across an envelope. At the back of my mind I knew what it carried but, I wasn't very sure. Intrigued, I opened the envelope only to discover my most treasured possession...three letters written by my grandmother! With no patience I began reading those letters. With every piece of advice my grandmother had left for me in those letters my eyes welled up only to rush down my dusty cheek! Later on I found two birthday cards designed by my younger brother and three letters written to me by my friends! I read all those cards and letter and rejoiced the moments spent with the authors of those letters! Oh! I had a ball reading all those stuff! I was elated and kept reminiscing those beautiful letters throughout the week!
Letters, with no social media and telephone were written on a huge scale by our grandparents and maybe by our parents too! Our generation is tech savvy. Birthday wishes, festive wishes and even normal conversation is done through WhatsApp! Some people do make calls for the above reasons but, most of us prefer social media (even I do sometimes).
Letters were the conventional source of conversation two generations back and I feel that was the best source. The letters with their own scent and the touch of our loved ones are sent and one can treasure them for lifetime. An encounter with a letter is a beautiful one....it refreshes memories....memories that leave us with happy faces each and every time we read it. We can't treasure WhatsApp messages! And even if we can, the sheer happiness of discovering a letter while cleaning stuff is something very different!
We are forgetting letters, kids like me are taught how to write a letter in class 10th. Did our grandparents 'learn to write letters' and that too in school!! No they learnt by reading those! I am afraid our generation would miss on letters and their beauty to touch hearts. I ardently feel that we must write letters so that this tradition of treasuring letters is carried forward by our future generations! Write a letter to your grandparents and they would be on cloud nine! Let's bring back letter; let's just bring them back!!

  1. The line that hits the hardest is: we can't treasure whatsapp messages.

Walking down the memory lane is always a pleasure. Very well written. Emotions are clearly evident through your words.

Letter writing is more than a mere skill to score marks. It connects like nothing else can. One of the reasons I can think of is because a letter takes time to reach from one place to another, the excitement is justified. No wonder it connects people.

    Good one! ☺️
